How to transplant

Joaquin González

Many  times we don't take into account the weight transplants havewhen we grow, but it is a very critical stage when talking about stress.

Small details make the difference and this translates into good results and happy plants. Here we explain briefly how you can have a garden full of joy.

The transplanting process marks a stage for the plant that can be decisive in its development, especially in the vegetative stage (we should never transplant in the flowering stage). This technique allows us to control the size of the plant and its production. It is ideal that it is not done more than once, because this process involves stress. If the transplant is from pot to pot, it's usually easier to control, since you supply the substrate.  When the transplant is to the soil, it must take into account some variables such as the depth and type of soil.

When we perform this task we know that the sun's rays affect the roots when they are bare, so it is recommended to perform this task during the afternoon (at sunset) or at night. This will avoid a greater stress and a better "gluing" of the roots.

What do we need?

  1. Gloves (optional)
  2. An easy-to-clean base (plastic bag)
  3. Substrate
  4. New pots
  5. Rooting agent

Phase 1 Preparation

  • Texture: It is important to water lightly the night before transplanting so that the "substrate bread" has a good consistency to be able to handle it. If it has  excess or lack of humidity, it is better not to do it.
  • Space: It is necessary to look for a place with space to be able to maneuver and thus to avoid waste of substrate. In that space put the plastic bag to work on it. You can also prepare a table and work on it, your back will be grateful.
  • Hygiene: It is optional to use gloves when in contact with the roots, but it is important because you could contaminate them. It is very important to wash your hands beforehand if you do not use gloves.

Phase 2 Transplanting

When? To know if it is necessary to transplant it is necessary to observe the lower part of the pot of the plant, when root tips appear it is possible to do it, from the moment they appear until it is necessary to transplant it can take a week and a half.

  • Positioning: The new pot should be filled with a bed of substrate at the base, the amount can be measured by inserting the old pot in order to see the final height of the transplant.
  • The death step: Place your hand on the top of the substrate and turn the pot 180 degrees. In case it does not come off the pot, it is optional to gently pat it 2 to 3 times to prevent the roots from breaking or the root loaf from breaking.
  • The edges are filled with substrate and the substrate is applied a couple of centimeters above the previous stratum line.

Phase 3 Stabilization

  • First watering: A medium amount of water is applied in relation to the size of the pot and should be applied in sessions, i.e., wait a couple of seconds for the water to move and then apply the same amount, in this way the substrate begins to breathe.
  • Stimulation: After the third watering, it is advisable to add some amendment or ferment that helps root development. This will improve the adhesion of the plant to its new substrate, a recommendation can be a lentil water.
  • It is important in this process to take into account the roots at all times, any breakage, bad movement and excess of light or water, can generate stress in these and consequently in the metabolism of the plant. If you provide good conditions, the plant will thank you and this will result in a successful transplant.

As you can see, it is a relatively simple process if you prepare yourself correctly for it, besides, as in everything, practice makes perfect.

If you are hesitant about which rooting agent to use in your crop, we recommend you to visit GB, The Green Brand. Where you can find all the equipment you need to carry out your projects and experiments of self-cultivation.
